What is International Business?

All business is really international. Our courses focus on the importing and exporting of products and services. Our courses teach students how international business is done in small and medium-sized companies. Many companies in the Orange County area should export their products or services, but do not export. Our District and Santa Ana college received funds from the U.S. Department of Education to internationalize our business curriculum. As a result, we have one of the largest programs of its kind in the United States.

Why should I take international business classes?

Because they are fun. If you like people from other countries, if you like travel and adventure, then you should check out international business. It is also an opportunity to make money and find a career.

How long is each course?

Some courses, such as business 125 and 106 are three unit classes that begin at the beginning of the semester and end at the end of the semester. Some are two unit classes, but most are one unit classes. Our four main sequences, Law, Logistics, Marketing, and Financing, are a series of one unit classes.

Who teaches the courses, and what are the teacher's backgrounds in International business?

Professor Doolittle is the only full time teacher in the program, and he is a former international business attorney. All of the other teachers work in some aspect of international business during the day ,and teach courses during the evenings. For example, One of our teachers works for a company the exports woman's acrylic finger nails world wide, another exports solar products through the Internet, several are freight forwarders, several are international attorneys and international bankers. Information about our teachers is available on this site.

How is this program different than international business programs at Universities and four year colleges?

Universities and four year colleges study the theories of international business. They focus on management and large multinational corporations. Our program is more practical and hands on. For example, in university international finance classes they may mention a finance document called a letter of credit, but the students will never see a letter of credit. In our classes, students will review letters of credit and learn how to check for discrepancies.

If I am interested in international business, why shouldn't I take my general education at Santa Ana College and study international business at a four year college?

Because our practical program at SAC and SCC will give you a tremendous advantage when you study at a more theoretical four year college. Some students in our program have a four year degree in international business or in business, and come to our college to learn the practical aspect international business.

What careers and jobs are available in international business?

Are international business courses transferable?

Yes, all international business classes are transferable as elective classes. However, our international marketing sequence of classes does not satisfy an international marketing requirement at a four year university. Why? a four year university teaches theory, and we teach the practical applications of international business.

Do I need to speak and read another language other than English to be in International Business?

No, you do not need to speak or read another language other than English to take the courses. It is highly recommended that you learn the language of the country you wish to do business in.
